Niagara ADL Today’s Special Mailing List Update 21.01.13
Whoa. It’s been over a month since the last update. Again - not because there is nothing to update - but because we are so busy we are having a hard time finding the time! Also - check out the new mailchimp layout! Your ADL Updates are now 10x more beautiful (Thank you Jen!)
REPORT BACKS
#IdleNoMore - Since our last update the ADL has been busy doing solidarity organizing around #IdleNoMore and our working group Friends of Kanonhstaton have been in overdrive. Members (and the M.A.D. megaphone) have been present at events in Oakville, Fort Erie, St. Catharines, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, Cayuga, Brantford, Thorold and Welland. We have also taken a stance in support of treaty rights and denounced SunMedia for creating a “settler panic” around a traditional deer hunt at Short Hills Park. Below is a picture of the ADL banner at an #idlenomore event blocking off the turning lane into the Ford Plant during a speech being given by Crime Minister Stephen Harper. We encourage all members to support and honour treaty rights and also support your local Idle No More - Idle No More Niagara.
Marineland Animal Defense - Since our last update M.A.D has - called for public tours of Marineland’s mass graves, held a New Year’s Day demonstration launching Operation Shut it Down (#OPSID), M.A.D. organizer Dylan Powell has been sued by Marineland for $1.5 Million + Injunctions, written about the history of the relationship between Marineland and Niagara Falls City Council, announced the “Make the Commercials Stop” speaking tour, launched the call for the “Marineland Global Awareness Week,” pressed a new run of t-shirts and updated our website! We have been, and will continue to be, extremely busy. Oh - and we also had Marineland call us - “Radical Animal Liberation Bullies” in the press!
Niagara ADL Holiday Food/Clothing Drive for the RAFT - The entire ADL came together in late December for a (vegan) Food and Clothing Drive for the RAFT. The response was amazing! Below is a photo of a car packed with goodies. Our working group - The Live Free Collective does year round monthly vegan food servings and has also done harm reduction workshops at the RAFT. We encourage all members to support and get involved in volunteering in the local shelter systems.
Combat Animal Testing - Combat Animal Testing launched this past week with bake sales, film screenings and demonstrations! The launch saw the first anti-vivisection demonstration at Brock University and also the first time Brock University has ever issues noticed to not “enter their buildings.” This was followed up by a first ever demonstration against Biolyse Pharma - a pharmaceutical lab in downtown St. Catharines that does generic testing on mice. A week of firsts!
Fur Free Niagara - Since our last update Fur Free Niagara has been back to Outdoors Oriented on Vansickle Rd. to remind them that Canada Goose jackets are cruel and won’t be accepted here. They had hired private security for this demonstration - but we still found creative ways to get our message out. We followed that up with a fake demonstrations where we never showed - but Outdoors Oriented’s hired private security did! Haha.
Dark Circle Collective - The Dark Circle Collective have been back to the St. Catharines Right to Life office to remind them that autonomy and choice must be respected and that misogyny will not be tolerated in the community.
Sustainer Fund - We are going to give report backs with each mailing list update so that all of our members, sustainers, followers and supporters can watch our sustainer fund grow! As it stands right now - we have 112 sustainers with a fund of $210/month! Our goal is 90/10 - 90 sustainers for $900/month - and we are already over 16% of the way there (if my math is correct!). If you are interested in becoming a sustainer please let us know. We can set up monthly donations via paypal, direct deposit, cash or cheque and accept and appreciate everything above $5/month (less than ONE latte!). We also have a new sustainer logo image - and this month new sustainers will be entered into a giveaway draw!
